Abstract
The work Child of the Dark, by Carolina Maria de Jesus, is an autobiographical account that highlights extreme poverty and the denial of fundamental rights, revealing the violation of human dignity even before the 1988 Constitution. This study analyzes the work from an interdisciplinary perspective between Law and Education, seeking to understand how the narrative reflects the ineffectiveness of social rights. Specific objectives include identifying the violations of rights within the narrative, relating them to constitutional principles—especially the principle of human dignity—and discussing education as an instrument for social transformation. The theoretical framework utilizes the contributions of Immanuel Kant (dignity as an intrinsic value), Paulo Freire (liberatory education), Pierre Bourdieu (reproduction of inequalities and cultural capital), and Norberto Bobbio (the effectiveness of human rights). The study concludes that the work remains relevant by denouncing the persistence of inequalities, reinforcing that critical education and effective public policies are indispensable paths toward social justice and human dignity in Brazil.
