Abstract
This article presents the theme: Why study Gypsy cultures? The experiences and lived experiences observed in a Calon group from Chapada Diamantina (Bahia). The reflections presented here are part of the introductory chapter of the doctoral thesis entitled Weaving Borders: Cultural Negotiations surrounding mixed marriages of non-Gypsy women with Gypsy men (2025), presented to the Postgraduate Program in State and Society (PPGES) at the Federal University of Southern Bahia – UFSB. The theoretical discussions are based on authors such as Clandinin and Connelly (2011), Hall (2006), Soria (2016), Teixeira (1998), Senna (2005), Hobsbawm (1997), Bhabha (2013), among others. According to contributions from Brazilian gypsy scholars and researchers, it is necessary to deconstruct stereotypical, prejudiced, and reductionist views about the ways of being and living of gypsy groups, as well as to identify the socioeconomic transformations associated with the transition from a nomadic lifestyle to a sedentary one, with mixed marriages being one of them.
