Abstract
The present research has as its general objective to understand the uses of pedagogical materials in Early Childhood Education, specifically, textbooks and literature in the school environment. The study recognizes the importance of pedagogical materials for child development when intentionally organized by the adult educator according to the interests, needs and motivations of children. This is a narrative research on experiences from everyday educational life, using participant observation and notes on reports of everyday scenes as data production instruments. The participants were children aged 4 and 5, members of a Municipal Early Childhood Education School, located in Aracaju, a city in the state of Sergipe, Brazil, and the head teacher. Based on the results, activities using textbooks are decontextualized from the children's learning needs and do not meet the class level, as they require writing activities with students who cannot yet read. It is also necessary to increase the use of literature books and for the municipality to distribute more teaching materials to schools that have more activities of interest to children.
