Abstract

From the perspective of Cultural History, this study examined the educational and religious work of seven colporters of the British and Foreign Bible Society (BFBS) in Brazil between 1873 and 1874, when Protestant printed materials circulated intensively across nine provinces, from Rio Grande do Sul to Paraíba. Based on BFBS reports preserved at the Cambridge University Library and Lembranças do Passado by João Gomes da Rocha (2015), it follows a qualitative, documentary, and bibliographical approach guided by the evidential paradigm (Ginzburg, 2016). Drawing on Chartier (1990, 1998) and Elias (1994), it views print circulation as a form of social mediation. The analysis reveals data on distributed materials, routes, resistance, and pedagogical strategies. The colporters, more than Bible distributors, acted as cultural mediators and agents of informal literacy, using reading as an instrument of faith and social transformation, fostering new cultural sensibilities in nineteenth-century Brazil.
